This is a macro photo of a milkweed seedpod against the snow. The pod has split open to let a few of the hairy seeds emerge. This milkweed plant, growing in a path near my front door, attracted monarch butterflies during the summer and became home to a monarch caterpillar. I looked and never did find its chrysalis but I’m sure it was well hidden and succeeded in its job. Now the milkweeds are resting up for another season of providing food and shelter for the monarchs. Covered in snow or frost, or against the snow, the pods can look like strange alien creatures when photographed up close like this.
